I was reading a great blog post by the site Mashable where they posted a post on “How Startups are using Social Media for Real Results“. The post hit on 4 main points how social media helps small business startups save money and still deliver great value. Read this great post to find out more.
The post fired up my brain cells and I started thinking about all the companies you now see that want you to follow them on Twitter or Facebook, or some other social media site. Just the other day the company I work for Belk Inc which is the nations largest privately owned department store chain finally jumped on the social media bandwagon, by advertising their Twitter and Facebook profiles for everyone to follow. This just goes to show that even the big companies with deep pockets for advertising are taking advantage of the free social media that is out there.
Social Media is a great way of bringing traffic to your site or keeping people
informed about your business. In the past you had to rely on your rankings in the search engines and other peoples links to bring traffic to your websites. If you were a business and were running a sale you had to rely on Advertising in your local newspaper, TV and radio to get the word out. Now if a company has 1,000 followers on Twitter they can send out a Tweet with a link to a coupon on their website for a sale and it did not cost them a dime. If you need to draw traffic to your website you can send out a link to your site via Twitter or Facebook to everyone that is following you and let them know about a new blog post or product you just launched.
The funny thing is we hear about social media and most of us use it daily to communicate with friends and family. When I first started to use Facebook I was looking for old High School friends and to keep up with family members who live far away. Most people don’t see the hidden value in using social media as a form of getting the word out about your website or business you own. Do you realize that you hold the key to building your brand and advertising your services with people that you have built relationships with by using social media? The people that follow you on Twitter or are your friends on Facebook know who you are and these are your target customers. These are the people that will be more likely to buy from you than someone who just stumbles upon your website via a link. You have built a relationship with the people on your social media sites and you should use this to your advantage when selling a product or driving traffic to your website.
Social Media has opened the door for us to build the relationship with the customer and has helped businesses big or small to have a following of people who 10 years ago they would have never had access to. If you are a business and are not using social media as a tool to get people talking about your products and services then you are missing out on a great free tool that is so easy to use.
