Are you Networking or Network Marketing?

Are you Networking or Network Marketing?

Networking and Network Marketing..

Are they two distinct subjects?

Or, do they blend together in a mutually

beneficial circumstance?

These ideas struck me while driving home from a Horse Show Announcing gig and had the pleasure of talking to someone  I had met several years ago and enjoyed mutually beneficial business relations…

We chatted for a while and caught up on what’s happening.

NETWORKING: “a process where you develop long term relationships with others for mutual benefit.”

Then, remembering his real expertise in the Construction business, I started to mention an opportunity I had heard about recently from another acquaintance from another past business dealing. I began describing the opportunity and directed the conversation that this might be something that would fit into his current business briefcase. The conversation was exciting and we decided to get back with each other and I could share more detail though e-mail by pointing him to published data and websites etc.

When I arrived home, I immediately called the C.O.O. of the Company discussed and asked if they were still in the market for a representative in that part of the country……
The outcome seems to be developing into a mutually beneficial relationship with the two people, each of whom had a “problem” and I provided a possible solution.

The key element exhibited here was over the years I had developed favorable relationships with the parties and stayed in touch so their initial conversations went well because of the common bond of ME.

Does that make me special?

Just shows how a Networker NETWORKS.
By the way, there is a comfortable “finders fee” involved, and the opportunity to offer expertise to the help develop a NEW relationship.

Over the past 50 years, it has not been uncommon to receive 10% of sales, a percentage of future business etc from putting people together…..
BUT what is odd, that is NOT the motivation for developing solid relationships with like-minded people. It is just a belief that helping others and yourself at the same time is Fun and Rewarding lifestyle

The Network Marketing Arena seems

to be a bit different

Network Marketing (according to Entrepreneur) Is a business model in which a distributor network is needed to build the business. Usually such businesses are also multilevel marketing in nature in that payouts occur at more than one level.

The proponents of the Network Marketing System promote the need to develop relationships, but in my estimation, do not encourage or show the HOW TO develop that presence of being Known, Liked, and Trusted within  the market area (be a Networker)

Networking or network MarketingA good friend Lindy Asimus just posted a unique article addressing that relationship building needs with a provocative Twist!

Who Loves Ya, Baby?

She emphasizes the need to truly develop solid relationships.

How does one capitalize on the skill set of Networking when they are involved in Network Marketing?

That takes some planning and execution of skills that we all possess,  but may need enhancing.

Personally, I feel two of the skills are the ability to Listen Effectively and being Sincere. We will be discussing these two skills in later posts, but for now, you will enjoy our new book Active Listening. A copy is yours with the only string attached of being Pay with a Tweet.

What direction does your blog intend?
    Small niche?
looks like an information site for Gamers?

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the
page layout of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got
to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could
connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images.

Maybe you could space it out better?

Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any suggestions for novice blog writers?

    I’d certainly appreciate it.

  5. Excellent post! We will be linking to this great content on our site.
    Keep up the good writing.

There may be a lot more duties and responsibilities an internet developer might
need to perform, which often is he’s working on. Web developers play an part in the economy today.
While they must be able to communicate efficiently in order to understand
what’s needed to get the task done, almost all of their
job is done. Backend web developers utilize coding languages
to be sure each of the characteristics at the site actually do the work.

    Great insight Greg,
Technology has been a benefit in many ways. We can reach more people initially, but the key is the followup.
I still keep 3×5 cards containing information and profile about interesting people I meet Off-line and On-line and am very willing to cross promote those who may have a skill or product needed by another…That is NETWORKING
    Thanks again for your input.
P.S. go to, upload your favorite picture using your normal e-mail and YOUR face will magically appear on all WP posts and comments you make.

There IS a big difference between the two words. In my opinion, Network Marketing is a child of the Internet. In the old days, we did Networking, but I don’t remember calling it that. It meant being around when people needed you, even going to weddings and funerals of our clients.

The views have changed, but I think Chuck will agree that if you abandon the old ways, you do so at your own peril. For example, this year I am sending real Christmas cards. I think a lot of people are starved for this attention.

In short, a few do live by Internet Marketing by itself. I don’t think that is enough.

  10. Chuck says:

    Thanks again Dipa,
There REALLY is a difference in reality. Anyone can become a NETWORKER without having any affiliate connection with another company.
If more Network Marketing aspirants would invest the tine and energy into learning HOW TO become effective Networkers, there would be MORE success stories in the “Network Marketing” field.

Did you get your copy of Active Listening?

  14. It’s a good topic. Networking is a part of network marketing and they are also distinct. Building a down line to turn networking into multi level marketing has challenges distinct from networking. But they also blend.

Effective listening and sincerity are important to successful networking and network marketing.

  15. Chuck says:

    You are correct Bill
Skills and Virtues can be expanded though Focus and practice.
I believe one can improve their Sincerity.
    You thoughts?

  16. Bill Leighty says:

True, but Listening is a skill and Sincerity is a virtue, not a skill. Both mandatory not only for marketing but for the success of any other business.
